CPO announced seven new projects that will improve Precipitation Data Development and Analysis – Climate Program Office

The funding will support 7 projects to advance the development of precipitation databases, which will help NOAA, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists improve monitoring and modeling capabilities to better inform communities about precipitation extremes.

The scientific community has highlighted, through a series of reports, assessments, and studies the growing need to improve our ability to accurately analyze precipitation extremes. Aligning with the objectives from NOAA, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Precipitation Prediction Grand Challenge Strategy (PPGC), CPO’s Climate Observations and Monitoring (COM) program selected 7 projects that will improve the use of observations in precipitation monitoring, prediction, and predictability research.

Each project will leverage existing precipitation data sets to develop new ways to visualize and analyze current and future precipitation events. Additionally, each project will focus on a different aspect of how the current knowledge gap is affecting the ability to accurately interpret the available data. The results of these projects will fill in those gaps, and ultimately reduce societal impacts from changing precipitation patterns.
