ESIP Meeting: Call for Sessions

Send in your proposals by Mon, May 8

We are excited to announce that the session proposal portal is open for the 2023 July ESIP Meeting. We will gather in-person in Burlington, Vermont, and online. The deadline for submission is 11:59 p.m. PT on Monday, May 8.

We will be working again with Charley Haley from Way Foragers to support session development. More to come!

New Blog: Deep Learning Around the (Icy) River Bend

In an ESIP Lab pilot project, Trung Bao Le from North Dakota State University set out to use LiDAR and deep learning algorithms to marry field observations, satellite data, and modeling for river flood predictions. He has taken his research into the unknown — where ice cover shrouds an underlying flood-to-be.

Volunteer at the EGU Data Help Desk

Volunteer as a data or software expert for the Open Science & Data Help Desk during the 2023 EGU General Assembly (April 24-28).

Join in-person at the booth, teach a demo or tutorial, answer Earth science data and software questions virtually over Twitter and Slack, or share a tool through a recorded demo or one-pager. Fill out our volunteer form by April 5.

Join the Operational Ethics Cluster’s first meeting on Monday, April 3 at 1 p.m. EDT. This is a kickoff meeting, after which recurring meetings will be scheduled. Learn more on their wiki page, Slack channel #operational-ethics, and subscribe to the mailing list.

Want to Present at the Summer Teacher Workshop?

The ESIP Education Committee will hold a workshop in Burlington, Vermont this summer with a focus on Earth science topics and the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse (teachers get “eclipse kits” for their classroom). Share the early sign up list with interested teachers.

The committee is also looking for ESIP speakers. Want to share your work with teachers who will inspire the next generation of Earth scientists, computing experts, and data managers? Reach out to the committee chair, Margaret Mooney (margaret.mooney@ssec.wisc.edu).

Apply for the AGU LANDInG Academy (March 31)

Applications are now open for the 2023-2025 AGU LANDInG Academy, a two-year professional development program for current and aspiring leaders of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the Earth and space sciences. In the first year, Fellows will engage with evidence-based resources to build expertise in the fundamentals of DEI. In the second year, Fellows will utilize their new knowledge to implement a personalized DEI project at their own institution. Apply by 31 March.

DOOS Meeting: Exploring collective solutions to global deep-sea challenges (May 9-11)

Join the Annual Meeting for the Deep Ocean Observing Strategy (DOOS). The event runs May 9-11 and is virtual. The focus is on scientific and societal needs across communities and disciplines, increasing global capacity to observe the deep sea. Register on the DOOS website.

OpenAQ Community Ambassadors – EXTENDED (March 29)

The OpenAQ Community Ambassador Program supports emerging air quality leaders in low- and middle-income countries in developing skills to fight air inequality. Over 10 months, Ambassadors receive a $2,000 stipend and interdisciplinary training (with a focus on using data), leadership development, and a supportive professional community to hone skills and expertise in the air quality field. Apply by Wednesday, March 29.

GEO OSE Needs Proposal Reviewers and Panelists (March 28)

The Geosciences Open Science Ecosystem (GEO OSE) program is looking for reviewers with varied expertise related to open science, cyberinfrastructure, and the full range of geosciences disciplinary areas to review proposals submitted to the GEO OSE solicitation (NSF 23-534). Send in a survey by Tuesday, March 28 for consideration.
