Flood Watch and Potential Severe Weather Today Through Tonight

CLANTON – Tuesday 7 am, February 22, 2022

A Flood Watch is in effect from 12 pm today through 12 pm Wednesday generally north of I-59.  Between 1-2 inches of rain fell in this area yesterday and an additional 1-3 inches are likely from late this afternoon through tonight.  There could be pockets of even higher amounts in stronger thunderstorms resulting in flash flooding.

In addition, a few supercell thunderstorms may develop near and north of I59 between 5 pm today and 1 am Wednesday.  Damaging straight-line winds and a couple of tornadoes are possible.  Storms also have the potential to repeatedly move across the same areas which will enhance the flooding potential.

The unsettled pattern will continue across the state into the weekend with scattered to numerous showers and a few thunderstorms Wednesday through Friday. Widespread severe weather is not anticipated, but a couple of strong to severe storms are possible each afternoon.  After a small break in activity Saturday, more rain is forecast to enter the northern portions of Alabama on Sunday.

If at all possible, avoid driving into areas of heavy rainfall near and north of I-59, as flooding may develop quickly.  It is very hard to detect how deep water is over roadways, especially at night.  Also, make sure you have at least two methods to receive alerts, have a safety plan, an emergency kit, know where you are on a map, and know where your safe place is.
