More Ways to Lighten Your Load and Save Money – Powerlines

As we continue into the year, we want to keep sharing ways to help you cut waste and save money on your electricity bills. The new electricity rates have gone up, but reducing your electrical load helps you control your energy costs.

Last time, we looked at several low- and no-cost ways to reduce our bills right now. Now, let’s look at more advanced ways to further lighten your load and save money.

1. Program your smart thermostat for optimal savings.

In addition to setting your thermostat lower when you’re asleep or away, consider a smart thermostat. This device allows you to create a heating and cooling schedule, optimizing energy usage.

We’ve said that each degree makes at least a 2% difference in your heat use. A smart device like this can adapt to your routine and make controlling your temperature easier. This helps ensure comfort when you’re home and efficiency when you’re not.

2. Maintain your heating and cooling equipment.

A well-maintained system not only saves money but also extends the lifespan of your equipment:

  • Regularly check and replace air filters in your HVAC system. Clogged filters make your system work harder, consuming more energy.
  • Schedule annual professional maintenance to ensure your heating and cooling equipment operates efficiently.

3. Install water-saving devices for your plumbing.

Extend your energy-saving efforts beyond heating and cooling by installing aerators, efficient showerheads, and other WaterSense products. We don’t often think of water affecting our electricity bills. But these devices reduce waste; that is, how much hot water you use. This results in savings on both your water and energy bills. Also, fixing leaks promptly is another way to prevent unnecessary energy and water waste.

4. Weatherize your home for comfort and savings.

Think about this: In summer, you’re using the air conditioner to stay cool; in the winter, the heater to keep warm. It can be tricky making your home just right for every season. No matter if it’s hot or cold outside, weatherizing your home can make it cozier and save you money on energy.

  • Weatherization means making changes to your home so you use less energy to stay comfortable.

This doesn’t just make your home feel better, but it also helps make your home more energy-efficient. And, you end up spending less money on heating and cooling. Consider these ways to weatherize your home:

  • Inspect and seal gaps around windows, doors, and vents. Sealing any gaps with caulk or weather-stripping can stop chilly air from getting in during the winter and keep the cooler air inside your home during the summer.
  • Invest in high-quality insulation for year-round comfort. Proper insulation not only keeps your home warmer in the winter but also cooler in the summer. Consider materials like fiberglass, cellulose, or foam board to effectively reduce heat transfer. Adequate insulation contributes to consistent indoor temperatures and lowers the strain on your heating and cooling systems.
  • Upgrade to energy-efficient doors and windows. When replacing windows, choose energy-efficient models recommended by the Department of Energy. Look for features such as double or triple-pane glass, low-emissivity coatings, and insulated frames. Better doors and windows mean better insulation, further cutting down on heating and cooling costs.

Don’t worry if you’re not sure where to start. The first step is to consider what works best for you. Remember, the combined impact of these steps helps you save money on your bills and contributes to a more comfortable, sustainable home.
