Renewable Energy Conference

9.15.11 (LAS CRUCES) – The New Mexico Green Chamber of Commerce will host a conference in Las Cruces to try and help push for more renewable energy jobs in the state. KRWG’s Jared Andersen has this report. Elisa Cudiff, Executive Director of the Las Cruces Green Chamber of Commerce is hopeful a Renewable Energy and Clean Technology Conference later this month will help spur more economic opportunities for clean energy businesses. Cudiff says, “Right now New Mexico is ranked second in the nation in terms of solar energy potential, but we’re near the bottom in terms of deployment. And so this conference is about bringing everyone together, all of the industry folks around the state and really learning what we need to do collectively to make sure that New Mexico you know really embraces its destiny to be the world leader in energy extortive renewables.”Currently at Dona Ana Community College about 15 students are training for green energy jobs according to Special Projects Coordinator Vince Thomas. Thomas says its’ been difficult recruiting students to enter the field, because renewable energy jobs aren’t overly abundant in the Las Cruces area. Thomas says, “From my experience if a company is going to come into Las Cruces, they need to know that they have trained personnel, it’s a difficult balance because which came first the chicken or the egg? Do you train people first and then wait for the jobs to come, do you have jobs waiting as people arrive to employ them, it’s a difficult balance, but we try to stay a little bit ahead of the game on that.”According to Elisa Cundiff the local military bases may step in and help provide more future renewable energy jobs in Las Cruces. Cundiff says, “And there are really big opportunities here in New Mexico with Fort Bliss and White Sands Missile Range they both have pretty aggressive standards and they’re willing to hire local folks in terms of installing photovoltaic and working on some of the other things so there are opportunities.”The New Mexico Green Chamber of Commerce Renewable Energy and Clean Technology Expanding Opportunities conference will be held on September 30th at the Rio Grande Theater in Las Cruces.
