‘Memorial’ founder jailed for 2 1/2 years
- On February 26, 2024, Oleg Orlov, founder and co-chair of the Memorial human rights group, was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison for “discrediting” the Russian armed forces. Orlov denied the charge, and termed political conditions in Russia “the suffocation of freedom.”
