Critical Incident Briefing: January 11, 2024 – 3300 E. Taylor Street

The Phoenix Police Department has released a Critical Incident Briefing (CIB) video that
includes audio, visuals and information related to an officer-involved shooting (OIS)
which occurred on January 11, 2024.
The Officer Involved Shooting occurred in the area of 33rd Street and Taylor Street
when Phoenix Police received a call to check the welfare of a nearby homeowner. The
caller indicated they had not seen their neighbor for several days and the home had
water running out of it.
The first officer to arrive at the home attempted to contact anyone inside the house
using both the front and back doors. When the second officer arrived, they again
attempted to locate anyone inside of the house. While standing at the open back door,
officers saw a man inside the home, later identified as the homeowner, and asked to
see his hands. The man responded by pulling out a handgun and pointing it in the
direction of the officers causing both officers to back away from the doorway. The man
made his way to the backdoor at which time he exchanged gunfire with one of the
officers.
The first two officers on scene remained behind cover. Additional officers responded and surrounded the home until officers from the Tactical Support Bureau arrived.
The man was ultimately located inside of the home where he was found deceased.
The handgun used by the man was recovered on scene. Detectives determined that the
man fired multiple times at the officers.
The officers involved in this shooting are assigned to the Mountain View Precinct and
each has 16 years of service with the Department.
This incident is the subject of a criminal investigation to be reviewed by the Maricopa
County Attorney’s Office.
It is also the subject of an administrative investigation.
Conclusions about whether the actions of the officers are consistent with department
policy and the law will not be made until all facts are known and the investigation is
complete.
