Grammys recap: Taylor Swift announces new album, wins ‘Album of the Year’

Taylor Swift stole the show at the Grammys by announcing the release of a new album and then winning Album of the Year.

Swift, 34, had just accepted the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album when she shocked the live audience at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles and millions watching on TV by revealing that “The Tortured Poets Department” will be released April 19.

She has now won album of the year four times, more than any artist in history, as she previously won for “Fearless,” “1989” and “Folklore.”

“I would love to tell you that this is the best moment of my life, but I feel this happy when I finish a song,” Swift said, before listing many other things that make her happy. “All I want to do is keep being able to do this. I love it so much.”

But Swift was just one of many female artists who dominated the yearly award show honoring the best in music. Billie Eilish won Song of the Year for “What Was I Made For?” which she also performed live alongside her brother Finneas.

Victoria Monét won Best New Artist, and Miley Cyrus won Record of the Year for “Flowers,” hours after she gave a rousing rendition of the song and won her first-ever Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance for the song.

“This award is amazing, but I really hope it doesn’t change anything,” Cyrus said. “Because my life was beautiful yesterday.”

SZA performed “Kill Bill” and took home early Grammys for “Ghost in the Machine” (Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, with Phoebe Bridgers), “SOS” (Best Progressive R&B Album) and “Snooze” (Best R&B Song).

“I’m just really overwhelmed,” she said after winning Best R&B Song. “You don’t really understand. I came really, really far, and I can’t believe this is happening. It feels very fake — Hi Taylor! I love you! — I’m just really grateful. I’m not an attractive crier. Have a good evening!”

Eilish also won Best Song Written for Visual Media for “What Was I Made For?”

Tracy Chapman made a surprise appearance to sing “Fast Car” alongside Luke Combs, whose cover of Chapman’s classic hit soared up the charts in 2023. Combs’ cover was nominated for Best Country Solo Performance, but Chris Stapleton won for “White Horse.” Stapleton also won Best Country Song and now has 10 career Grammys.

The supergroup boygenius, made up of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus, won Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song for “Not Strong Enough.” However, Paramore won Best Rock Album for “This is Why.” Instead, boygenius took home Best Alternative Album for “The Record.”

Piano man Billy Joel performed his first pop single in more than three decades, “Turn the Lights Back On,” which was released Thursday.

Killer Mike won Best Rap Album for “Michael” and Best Rap Song for “Scientists & Engineers,” which also featured Andre 3000, Future and Eryn Allen Kane. Mike, 48, also won Best Rap Performance.

Shortly after the sweep, the rapper and activist was marched out of the arena in handcuffs. Los Angeles police did not confirm his arrest, but social media videos showed the shocking scene. Cops said only that a man had been detained at the arena in connection with a physical altercation.

In a brand-new category, Kylie Minogue won Best Pop Dance Recording for “Padam Padam” and thanked her team in a tweet.

Jack Antonoff won Producer of the Year, as he was behind three well-received albums during the year: Swift’s “Midnights,” Lana del Rey’s “Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd” and The 1975’s “Being Funny in a Foreign Language.”
