Health camps reveal lifestyle-related diseases among tribals | Mysuru News – Times of India

Mysuru: Trends picked up from the two health camps carried out in the district revealed that there is an urgent need to address the causes resulting in lifestyle-related diseases.
75% of the tribals, who were screened by Sankara Eye Foundation, were diagnosed with several eye disorders. In another health camp for KSRTC staff of the city revealed that around 30% of them suffer from hypertension, diabetes, heart diseases, and dust allergy-related issues.
The status of health among tribals was revealed in the eye examination for tribal communities carried out by Sankara Eye Hospital, Coimbatore, at various tribal villages in Hunsur and Periyapatna taluks in Mysuru district over the last six months.
Out of the 1,000 tribal community members who are above 40-years-old, over 75% of them were diagnosed with several eye disorders and a majority of them required immediate medical intervention. Major eye disorder diagnosed was cataract, followed by glaucoma, oculoplasty and eye disorders in the retina and cornea.
According to Ganasekaran C, unit head, Sankara Eye Hospital, it is worrisome. Not only medical intervention but also concerted efforts are required to raise awareness and promote preventive measures to improve their health, he said.
State indigenous tribal forum convener Vijayakumar said, the tribal haadis (hamlet) are facing serious health crisis due to various reasons. “In the last one year, we received nutritional food only twice. Many times the quality of the food supplied to us is sub-standard. It has resulted in various health issues,” he said.
“We are constantly raising this issue. But there is no solution till now,” he said.
Tribals getting addicted to alcohol and ganja
He also stated that more and more tribal populations are now getting addicted to alcohol, and ganja which is seriously affecting their health. “Govt needs to come out with an action plan to save our population from getting addicted to these substances,” he said.
Meanwhile, another health check-up camp organised for over 750 staff of the KSRTC Vijayanagar, Banni Mantap, Kuvempu Nagar and Sathagalli depots by VR Trust headed by Dr Shushrutha Gowda HV, a neurologist, revealed that around 30% of the staff who attended the health camp are suffering from lifestyle diseases, including hypertension, diabetes and dust allergy. Around 10% of the staff were diagnosed for the first time, said Dr Shushrutha Gowda.
During the health check-up camps, we get 20% of people with these problems. However, it was high among the KSRTC staff, he said.

Heart diseases, dust allergies were also very common. The lifestyle, stress, lack of health infrastructure for KSRTC workers are the reason for this high magnitude of non-communicable diseases in KSRTC workers. Health insurance scheme, similar to the police (Arogya, Bhagya Yojana), lifestyle and health condition-counseling and education, providing free breakfast, or lunch at their workplace similar to Indira Canteen, regular health check-up are the required interventions, he said.
M Vijaya Kumar, state working president, KSRTC Staff and Workers’ Union, said the need of the hour is comprehensive health insurance scheme for the KSRTC staff. We are demanding a cashless facility in line with police, and other departments, he said.
