On Sunday, March 17, 2024, at approximately 1:57 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a three-vehicle crash in the 900 block of South Interstate Highway 35 Service Road SB. The driver of one of the vehicles, Joe Ildefonso Garcia, was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. All others involved refused transport, remained on scene, and are cooperating with the investigation.
This incident is being investigated as Austin’s 17th fatal crash of 2024, resulting in 17 fatalities for the year. On the date of this crash in 2023, 22 fatal crashes resulted in 22 fatalities.
