Women’s History Month 2024 Campaign Round-Up – Climate Program Office

In March (and the beginning of April) 2024, CPO held an interview campaign that highlighted four CPO staff scientists and CPO-funded scientists for Women’s History Month, and released an article about early women in Earth and climate science.

Diane Brown

Diane Brown, a senior member of the Administrative Services Division (ASD) at CPO, is an expert in federal grants management with over 40 years experience. In her current position as grants manager, she provides administrative and technical oversight of all CPO grants. She informs CPO of upcoming deadlines and deliverables, ensuring smooth processing of grants. 

Xin Lan, PhD 

Dr. Xin Lan is a carbon cycle scientist with NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory (GML) through the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) of University of Colorado Boulder. At GML, Dr. Lan is the lead scientist responsible for NOAA’s Global Cooperative Greenhouse Gas Measurement Program (part of the Global Greenhouse Gas Reference Network). 

Abbie Liel, PhD 

Abbie Liel is a professor of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Abbie is funded by the Climate Program Office’s Modeling, Analysis, Predictions, and Projections (MAPP) Program to contribute to a new research project focused on the impact of extreme snow loads and rain on snow events on building design amid climate change. Abbie will serve as co-lead for the NOAA Projections Task Force to enhance engagement across the climate projections teams.

Juli Trtanj

Juli Trtanj is the NOAA Climate and Health Program Director, One Health Program Lead, and National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS) Executive Director. She’s been instrumental in advancing the climate and health field through partnerships with dozens of federal agencies, growing it into coordinated domestic and international efforts, and expanding the breadth of topics being addressed in climate and health resilience strategies.

Women’s History Month: early women in Earth and climate science (also posted to Climate.gov) 

For Women’s History Month, Climate.gov has decided to take a brief look at some of the early women in earth and climate science. Women’s History Month serves to honor the first women who had the courage to break into traditionally male spaces and to acknowledge those who went unrecognized for their contributions.
